Earning CE Credit hours

Modified on Wed, 14 Oct at 5:53 PM

This article explains the approved ways Georgia veterinary professionals can earn Continuing Education (CE) credit beyond the required LEAP CE hour. Use the Table of Contents below to jump to the method you're asking about. For the full Board rule, see the reference link at the end of the article.

Seminars (Lectures and Labs)

How is seminar credit calculated?
You can earn one (1) hour of CE credit for every 50 minutes of contact time. Seminars include lectures and labs.

What doesn't count as a seminar?
Opening remarks, business sessions, unstructured demonstrations, and degree programs do not qualify. Only organized educational activities that involve direct interaction and engagement with the material count toward credit.

Journal Studies and Non-Interactive Online Courses

Can I earn credit for reading journal articles or taking online courses?
Yes, with limits. You can earn up to three (3) hours for journal studies that require follow-up testing.

For non-interactive computer-generated courses, you can earn up to fifteen (15) hours: again, only if follow-up testing is conducted.

In both cases, the follow-up testing is what makes the credit valid. It's how the Board confirms you actually engaged with the material.

Daily Hour Cap

Is there a limit on how many CE hours I can earn in one day?
Yes. A maximum of twelve (12) hours is permitted per calendar day, regardless of how long the event runs.

In-House Training for Veterinarians

How much in-house training counts for veterinarians?
Veterinarians can earn up to six (6) hours through in-house training at their place of employment. Anything beyond six hours won't count toward your required total, so plan the rest of your hours through approved external providers.

In-House Training for Veterinary Faculty

How much in-house training counts for veterinary faculty?
Veterinary faculty at AVMA-accredited institutions can earn up to ten (10) hours through in-house training.

For the purpose of this rule, "in-house training" means programs exclusive to the institution's employees.

Peer Review for the Board

Can I earn CE credit for peer review work?
Yes. Licensees who perform peer reviews for the Board may earn up to three (3) hours of CE credit.

Credit for Presenting a Lecture

Can I earn CE credit for teaching or presenting?
Yes. Each lecture on a subject area earns two (2) hours of CE credit, regardless of how many times you present the course.

You can claim this credit for a maximum of five different subjects.

The cap is on different subjects, not different presentations. Delivering the same lecture ten times still only counts as one subject.

Board Rule Reference

  • Where can I read the official Board rule?
The complete rule is published by the Georgia Secretary of State: Board Rule 700-7-.03.

Rules can change between renewal cycles. Always confirm the current requirement against the official Board rule and the License Renewal Checklist on the Regulatory Hub before you submit.
